VoIP Phone FAQ

1. Do I need a VoIP phone system or provider for my VoIP phone?

Yes, a VoIP phone must be connected to either an on-premise VoIP system or a hosted VoIP service for it to work. Always check compatibility with your system or provider before choosing a phone.

2. Is there any difference between an IP phone and a VoIP phone?

No, there’s no difference. Both terms mean the same thing. “IP phone” is simply a shorter way of saying “VoIP phone.”

3. What is a SIP phone?

A SIP Phone is a VoIP phone that uses the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard for communication. Since SIP is the most widely used VoIP standard, SIP phones are the most common type available.

4. Do VoIP phones need a power supply?

Not always. Most VoIP phones support PoE (Power over Ethernet). If your switch or injector provides power through the Ethernet cable, you don’t need a separate power adapter. If not, then you’ll need a power supply.

5. Why do VoIP phones usually have two Ethernet ports?

One port connects the phone to the network, and the other allows a computer to connect through the phone to the same network. This setup reduces the need for extra cabling and lowers infrastructure costs.

6. Do Gigabit VoIP phones have better sound quality than non-Gigabit phones?

No. Gigabit ports only allow faster data transfer speeds for connected computers. VoIP calls don’t require Gigabit speed to sound good.

7. What does HD voice mean?

HD voice refers to high-definition audio for clearer and more natural conversations. It captures a wider range of sound frequencies compared to standard phones, making calls easier to understand and more productive.

8. What is a BLF key?

A BLF (Busy Lamp Field) key lets you monitor another extension. If that extension is on a call, the BLF light will show it as busy. You can also use it as a shortcut to call that extension.

Video Conferencing FAQ

1. What is video conferencing?

Video conferencing (also called teleconferencing) is a live video connection that allows people in different locations to communicate using both audio and video.

2. What is VCaS (Video Conferencing as a Service)?

VCaaS is a cloud-hosted video conferencing service that works on a subscription basis. These services are more affordable than traditional systems and don’t require special hardware in most cases. Users can join meetings using webcams, headsets, or smartphones. Popular VCaaS providers include Zoom and BlueJeans.

3. Do I need special equipment for video conferencing?

Yes, you need a standards-based video conferencing system from providers like Polycom, Cisco, or Lifesize. Depending on the setup, you may also need cameras, USB speakerphones, and headsets. For large rooms, systems like the Polycom Group 500 are recommended.

4. What is a video conferencing codec?

A codec is the system that encodes and decodes video conferencing signals. It compresses the video/audio data for transmission and then decodes it on the receiving end. Common codecs used in video conferencing include H.264 SVC, H.264 High Profile, and H.263.

5. Do I need a special display for video conferencing?

Any modern flat-screen TV can work. However, for frequent or professional use, a high-quality commercial-grade display is recommended to ensure clarity and durability.

6. What does far end camera control mean?

Far end camera control allows the remote participant to adjust the camera in your room. This helps them get the best view of you or shared items like a whiteboard.

7. What is multisite video conferencing?

Multisite video conferencing allows three or more locations/participants to connect in a single meeting.

8. What is point-to-point video conferencing?

Point-to-point video conferencing involves just two participants or locations connecting directly.

9. What is content sharing?

Content sharing allows participants to share files, documents, or screens (like PowerPoint, Excel, or videos) during a video meeting.

10. Does content sharing require two displays?

No, it doesn’t always require two displays. With one display, shared content and the video feed appear on the same screen, usually split. If your system supports dual displays, one screen shows the video participants while the other shows the shared content.
